Radon Testing

Most people take the precautions they can to protect their family from harm. However, sometimes the intruders you can’t see can be the most dangerous. Radon gas is a health risk throughout the United States. It cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted, nor can radon levels be predicted based on state, local, or neighborhood levels. This radioactive gas forms when 1) uranium decays below the surface of the earth, 2) is released through rocks, soil, and water, and then 3) seeps into your home through small cracks and other openings. The only way to know for certain if it’s present in your home is to order radon testing.

The Dangers of Radon

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

Exposure to radon gas causes no immediate symptoms.

Radon is present both indoors and outside.

All homes are at risk of radon exposure, regardless of foundation type or the year built.

RADON IN TENNESSEE

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) considers radon to be a very serious problem in the state. Tennessee Department of Health and the Tennessee Radon Program are in full agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that every home in Tennessee should be tested for radon. If you are buying or selling a home, make sure radon testing is part of your transaction. At NHI, we use a continuous 48-hour radon gas monitor. Once the test is complete, the results are typically available on the same day.

ARE NEWLY BUILT HOMES AT RISK FOR RADON?

Unfortunately, that answer is yes. Many people believe that a home that has just been built can’t be at risk for radon because the materials are new. However, radon is in soil, rocks, and water and can pass through small cracks and holes that are present even in new builds. The only way to know for certain is to get a radon test.
